Most "grants for small business" articles online are outdated or link to schemes that closed. Here's the shortlist that's actually accepting applications in early 2026.
Federal
Export Market Development Grants (EMDG)
Reimburses up to 50% of eligible export promotion expenses, capped at AU$80,000. Best for brands ready to sell to New Zealand, the US, or Southeast Asia.
Boosting Female Founders Initiative
Matched funding for majority-women-owned startups. Rounds have historically opened in Q1 and Q3.
R&D Tax Incentive
Not technically a grant, but returns 43.5% of eligible R&D spend as a tax offset for companies with less than AU$20M turnover. Product development counts.

How to actually win one
- Read the assessment criteria first. Not the marketing page — the actual rubric.
- Match your language to their language. If they say "commercialisation outcome," don't write "getting customers."
- Include specific numbers. Every strong application has a table of milestones with dates and dollars.
- Get help. Business.gov.au has free advisors; use them.
Grant applications take 20–40 hours to do well. If your business idea can't survive without one, it usually can't survive with one either.
